| A steel fence has been erected and diggers have moved in to start constructing the facility, which will comprise 1000 square metres of concrete incorporating a street section, bowls, wallows, ramps, flatbanks, and quarter pipes.
The council’s leisure and arts department is providing £170,000 with the other £60,000 coming from the Scottish Executive’s Quality of Life Fund.
Clachan Construction Ltd, which submitted the lowest tender of just under £190,000, has been awarded the contract. Allowances of just over £40,000 take the total cost up to £230,000.
The main driving force behind the facility has been Skaters With A Vision (SWAV), a group that meets weekly at the Steeple Church in the Nethergate.
SWAV is mainly made up of 12 to 16-year-olds, organised by council youth workers, with the aim of promoting a positive image of skateboarders, bladers and BMXers.
The facility will not be lit, but conduits for lighting have been included in the building plans in order to accommodate lighting should the need or funding arise. |
