Appeal to Scots from aid worker
An international aid worker from Dundee has called on more Scots to help poor people in developing countries.
Chartered accountant Iain Walker, a former student at Harris Academy and Dundee University, has returned to Britain after a stint working with the international relief agency GOAL.

He worked as a financial controller during the recent famine in Malawi where GOAL provided food aid to 1.9 million people every month. He then moved on to a roving role, providing financial management support to programmes in Ethiopia, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Kosovo.

He is now working in London for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Iain said there was a need for more experienced personnel including medics, engineers, logisticians and managers to deliver aid in emergency situations.

He said, “Niger is a perfect example. Money is being donated, food and drugs delivered, but experienced nurses and doctors are still needed to make sure these resources are properly used and as many lives saved as possible.”

‘GOALies’ work alongside some 2000 local staff in a variety of humanitarian programmes in 15 countries.
