SFA HEARING: DEE HOPEFUL
Dundee headed for another SFA hearing today, convinced that if justice was done they would be finishing the day back in the SPL (writes Tom Duthie).
After a summer-long battle for what they believe is justice, an SFA appeals committee in Edinburgh was considering the Dark Blues plea for Livingston to have points deducted over the Hassan Kachloul affair — a move that would see them relegated instead.

Last month, Livi were fined £15,000 for paying Kachloul while he was operating on an amateur contract in the closing two months of last season.

That punishment, Dundee believe, was too lenient for an offence which, historically, has seen those found guilty hit with both a monetary penalty and points reductions.

The SPL felt that was not appropriate in this case because they believe Kachloul could have been signed as a professional and, therefore, payment to him amounted to little more than a storm in a teacup, worthy only of a fine.

Dundee were today arguing the basis for that judgment was wrong and were producing documentary evidence from FIFA that states amateur or professional status cannot be switched between transfer windows, making the breach more serious than SPL board members were led to believe.

Even if, however, the SFA share that view and call for a points deduction, the matter is unlikely to be resolved today.

Livi have already gone to court to ask for a judicial review of the SFA’s conduct since they became involved in the affair.

On top of that, it is understood the SPL may fight any attempt by the SFA to force them to hand out a stiffer penalty.

With just five days to go to the start of the new season that means Dundee remain unsure of where they will be playing.

Wherever it is, defender Callum Macdonald is now certain to miss out after failing to take part in either of the weekend’s City of Discovery Cup games.

Macdonald had a knee operation at the end of last term and, although he is nearing fitness, he is not quite ready for action.

“He’s still feeling the knee a wee bit and, in terms of competitive work, is not there yet. That’s why we left him out of the games on Saturday and yesterday, and it will probably be another couple of weeks before he can play,” said boss Jim Duffy.

Derek Soutar, Steven Robb and Stephen McNally missed out as well, but all three could still feature in the opener, which remains scheduled to be a Challenge Cup tie at home to East Stirling on Sunday.

“It will take a day or two for things to become clearer with them, but they could make it. We’ll also have to check on Barry Smith, who has taken a couple of knocks.”

CHISHOLM HOLDS KEEPER OPTIONS OPEN

BILLY DODDS holds the City of Discovery Cup.

Dundee United boss Gordon Chisholm may look at another trialist goalkeeper before deciding who he wants to buy to compete with Derek Stillie for the No. 1 jersey at Tannadice (writes Tom Duthie).
In yesterday’s City of Discovery Cup Final, Gordon had a look at ex-Arsenal man Rami Shaaban but, while he has not dropped interest in the Swede as yet, no offer of a contract has been forthcoming.

Earlier this month, ex-Kilmarnock man Craig Samson also had a trial and he is still in the manager’s thoughts.

“Rami has gone back south today and I’ll be speaking to his agent, as well as the coaches here, about him,” said Gordon.

“I’ve a decision to make, but I’ve still got a little bit of time and I want to make sure I get the right man.

“Craig is still in my thoughts and there is also a chance that I could have a look at someone else — that’s something I’ll think about over the next day.”

Gordon was delighted with his players’ performance in the two City of Discovery games over the weekend, but, for most of the young side who won yesterday’s final against Sheffield Wednesday, there was little time to rest on their laurels.

Minus first-team squad men like Billy Dodds, Collin Samuel and James Grady, yesterday’s team will be on duty for the friendly at Tayport tonight.

Looking ahead to the SPL opener against Aberdeen on Saturday, midfielder Barry Robson will miss that one because of suspension.

That, however, is not why he sat out Saturday and Sunday’s games.

“Barry has a calf strain and, although we could have risked him, if he aggravated it he might have been out for a couple of weeks so it was better he didn’t play.

“He should be back in full training by around Wednesday,” explained Gordon.

Tickets for the Dons clash are on sale from the club shop opposite Tannadice.

Saints in talks
St Johnstone are talking to the representatives of goalkeeper Mark Paston and former Clyde midfielder Darren Sheridan in the hope of adding the pair to their squad (writes James Masson).
Both played as trialists in the 1-0 home friendly win over Dunfermline and pleased Saints’ boss Owen Coyle. Paston was most recently at Walsall and has also been capped by New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Scott Paterson and John Henry continue on trial with the Perth club.
