| Lord Provost John Letford today received a cheque for £400 from the Lifegate community church in Whitfield.
The donation is the latest in a series of cheques that have added several thousand pounds to the fund this week alone.
Pastor Geoff Findlay and his wife Debbie, who is also the church administrator, presented the cheque to the Lord Provost at the City Chambers.
The cash was raised from donations made by the church’s congregation over the past few weeks.
In total the fund now stands at more than £116,000, well on the way to the ambitious target of £500,000 set when it was established.
The fund gives the people of Dundee the opportunity to contribute to the massive rebuilding effort required to rehabilitate the areas devastated by the tsunami.
Mr Letford welcomed today’s donation as further evidence of the generosity of Dundee’s citizen’s and urged them to continue their efforts to help with the rebuilding work, which will take years.
The Lifegate community church was set up in Whitfield three years ago by Pastor Findlay and his wife. Although both originally from Dundee they have spent time living abroad, as missionaries in Uganda and at Bible school in New Zealand.
“We did a survey in Whitfield and asked people what they would want from a community church,” Mrs Findlay said.
“They said they would like a casual church without formality and which provided something for young people in the area to do.” |
