Camping for chance to buy new home

Some of the hopeful house buyers queuing at the South Road site today.

The shortage of affordable family homes in Dundee was highlighted by potential buyers camping out to try to secure one of the new houses going on sale tomorrow, writes Lynne Stewart.
Not one brick has been laid at the Victoria Gardens development in Lochee, but around 15 people, desperate to get their hands on one of the new properties, have been forming a queue since Wednesday.

However, the queuing may be in vain as the price of the properties has not yet been released and may be out of the budget of many people waiting.

The 23 houses, ranging from three-bedroom semi-detached to four-bedroom detached homes with single garage are due to go on sale at 11am tomorrow and those waiting have been given numbered tickets as the homes will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

It is believed four homes will be sold at a slightly cheaper cost than the rest.

The development is on the site of the yard of former construction company Taycon at the corner of South Road and Donald Street. Bett Homes acquired the site after Taycon went into liquidation.

Bett’s was granted permission earlier this year to demolish the former Taycon factory and sawmill to make way for housing.

Mrs Alison Hoey, who has been camping out since yesterday afternoon, said “There never seems to be any new houses in this area. There is no bidding involved in buying new houses and that is a big advantage as at least you know what you are going to have to pay.”

Mrs Morag Loftus who lives in Tayport, but is looking to move back to Lochee, said she was taking it in shifts with family members to camp out.

Prospective buyer Nicola Casey said, “We were looking for an affordable family home with a garden and they are in short supply at a reasonable cost.

“We don’t know how much they are going to be so this might all be a waste of time if they are outwith my budget. We are all certainly getting to know our neighbours before we even move in.”

Mrs Karen Fitzpatrick decided to camp out after losing out on other houses in the area. “When we heard people had started queuing we thought we had better come along too. We don’t know how much they are yet so it may turn out that they are too expensive.”

Tricia Malek, sales director at Bett Homes North East Limited said, “We are delighted with the response to Victoria Gardens. The combination of a central location and quality homes is clearly hitting the right note with homebuyers in the area.”
