Prince’s Trust team prepare for Bulgarian nursery challenge

Lord Provost John Letford hands over the gift of whisky to team leader Jim Donaldson, at City Chambers, watched by members of the team.

A team of unemployed young people from Dundee are preparing for a three-week trip to Bulgaria, where they will help renovate a nursery used by children from the country’s Roma minority.
Their visit is part of the Prince’s Trust European team challenge, which involves groups of 18 to 25-year-olds doing voluntary work in central and eastern Europe.

A trust spokesperson said, “Young people have the opportunity to learn what it means to work as a team, to become part of a different community and experience a totally new culture.”

Today the team visited City Chambers to meet Lord Provost John Letford. He presented them with whisky to take as a gift to civic leaders in the town of Kustendil.

Team leader Jim Donaldson, who has been seconded from Tayside Fire and Rescue, said, “This is as much about self-development as it is about helping others less fortunate than ourselves.

“Each member of the team has had difficulties in their lives.

“This challenge will help them to improve their confidence and give them the courage that is needed to succeed in life.”

Jim said the nursery is very run-down and the plan is to clean and paint four classrooms and fix the children’s beds, with the aid of local volunteers.

The Roma form a significant minority of the populations of several eastern European countries, but they often discriminated against and suffer from high levels of unemployment and deprivation.
