| To help the ‘Who We Are’: Dundee’s 21st Century Museum Project to get off the ground, the former Ward Road Library is being converted into a new unit to be called the McManus Collections Unit, and is to be a complementary facility to the museum.
It will house the social history, early history and natural sciences collections alongside technical support facilities.
A new lift is also being installed, and public open days are planned for visitors to find out more about the collections.
Leisure and arts convener Charles Farquhar was onsite today to inspect progress.
He said, “We are delighted to be moving forward with this exciting project. The work is going well and the city collections will have a new home which is far better organised and accessed than the cramped basements at McManus Galleries and Museum.
“This major project has been years in the making, and it is great to see work start on the ground.”
The development project is geared at creating a museum for the 21st century that inspires, educates and entertains, and which brings our heritage and art alive while securing its conservation.
It also aims to tell a vivid story of Dundee from earliest geological times to current living memories, restore the current Gothic grandeur of the McManus Galleries building and create a “must see” attraction in the heart of the city. |
