Angus football clubs taking spectator safety seriously
Four senior football clubs in Angus have work to do in ensuring spectator safety, but are taking their responsibilities seriously according to a new report, writes Graham Brown.
As part of the annual safety of sports ground inspections carried out annually, experts visited the four grounds earlier this year and a report on the condition of the stands at the clubs was prepared for presentation to Angus councillors tomorrow.

Each outfit was given the chance to respond to points raised by the safety team in their report.

“From examination of the responses, the management of the clubs do appear to be continuing to take their responsibilities seriously and, within the limits of their resources, are tackling the matters which have been highlighted in their particular reports,” says Angus law director Catherine Coull in her report to this week’s meeting.

“As far as Gayfield Park is concerned, the team noticed extensive corrosion on many of the barriers tested around the ground.

“However, Arbroath FC are carrying out measures to have them assessed, tested and replaced where necessary.”

The report continues, “In light of Brechin’s promotion to the First Division, the safety team has supported a recommendation by Tayside Police that arrangements for crowd segregation during the forthcoming season should be similar to those in operation in season 2003/04.

“Such segregation will only be deemed necessary at predetermined games where attendance figures can reasonably be anticipated to be higher that the norm.”

The report also mentions Forfar FC’s hopes of building a new stand at Station Park.

However, it adds that since the project is temporarily on the back burner, the safety team’s recommendation is for a structural survey of the current facility, including areas which cannot be visually checked.

The Angus inspection was rounded off at the Links Park, home of Montrose FC, where Tayside Fire Brigade recommendations for urgent action in relation to two points raised under fire precautions were highlighted.

“The Tayside sports grounds safety team will continue to monitor the situation at each ground in Angus on a regular basis and, if necessary, will advise the council on whether any action is necessary in connection with the safety certificates,” the report adds.
