Samantha’s ‘dream of peace’

Samantha Buchan with her award-winning design.

A design by Samantha Buchan, of Douglas Primary School, is to be used for the Scottish Inter-Faith Council’s greetings cards this year.
Her “dream of peace” concept so impressed the judges at the Festival of Faiths gathering in the Marryat Hall that it was reproduced in colour on the cover of one of the sections of the programme.

Representatives of the Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Baha’i, Buddhist and Christian faiths took part in the joint celebration to mark the ethnic and religious diversities within the City of Discovery.

The theme of the event was peace, reconciliation and mutual understanding.

A highlight was the lighting of seven candles of unity by children from Dundee primary schools who had taken part in a linked project to express their dream of peace.

Eight children — Bethany Robertson, Thomas Forster, Vanessa Mendham, Ruqueia Ossman, Catriona MacLean, Molly Seivwright, Ashley Gorrie and Sarah Strachan — whose contributions had been selected from over 80 entries, read extracts from their work.

Each was followed by a member of one of the faith communities with a reading or prayer from their own tradition.

Another highlight of the evening was a performance by the Bharatiya Ashram dancers.
