| The bitch — thought to have had a litter of puppies recently — was left to starve after being tied to a tree in woodland in Caird Park.
The SSPCA were called to collect the animal after a boy discovered her as he walked through the woods on Saturday evening.
Senior Inspector Mark Lumgair said the Labrador was in a generally good condition for its age but was in a distressed state when it was found.
He said the person who had abandoned the dog was extremely callous and appealed to anyone with information about her to come forward.
Mr Lumgair said, “On Saturday night I was called out to collect an elderly golden Labrador bitch that had been abandoned by being tied to a tree in Caird Park. This dog has been used quite a lot for breeding — its stomach and mammary teats are quite distended — so obviously it has recently been suckling.
“The dog is in a good enough condition but obviously on Saturday night she was a little bit distressed and apprehensive — perhaps because she was away from her litter.”
The bitch was examined by a vet this morning who estimated that she was between seven and 10-years-old. She has an ear infection and in-growing eyelids that will require surgery. The condition is hereditary and is likely to have manifested itself in some of her puppies.
Anyone who recognises the unloved lab should contact the SSPCA at their animal welfare centre at Petterden on Dundee 380593. |
