Sugar creations bring sweet success

Dundee College lecturer Walter McCrindle has won dozens of medals for his sugar art creations and was proud when one of his students scooped a prize at the ScotHot 2005 competition.
SVQ II catering and hospitality student Sandra Riddler won a bronze medal at the Scottish Culinary Championships.

Her depiction of a floral arrangement, including roses and different types of lilies — all made from sugar — impressed the judges at the SECC in Glasgow.

Walter, who trained Sandra in the craft of sculpting from molten sugar, was also impressed.

He said, “Sandra has shown a real aptitude for sugarcraft and I was delighted to see her receive a medal.

“This was the silver jubilee ScotHot and so attracted far more entrants and a higher quality of skills than in previous years, yet Sandra proved she was among the top flight.”

Compared to Sandra, Walter is a competition veteran, having been competing for about 20 years. He took two bronzes in this year’s Pastillage category. One of his entries featured characters from the film Shrek II.
