Marketgait taking shape

A general view of the progress at South Marketgait.

Roadworks at South Marketgait in Dundee, scheduled to last for six months, are progressing well, Dundee City Council said.
The work, the first phase in the ambitious long-term central waterfront project designed to connect the city centre with the River Tay, got underway earlier this month and is due for completion in October.

Already, the old road surface has been removed and gas, water and phone lines are in the process of being diverted to fit in with the realignment of West Marketgait southwards.

The city council said that engineers are now excavating the new carriageway that will free up land for future development and allow a grid-type layout of streets to be constructed leading down to the waterfront.

The £2.9 million scheme also includes plans for a junction at Greenmarket to provide easier access to the new Seabraes Yard digital media park.

During the work, access to Greenmarket for the Sensation science centre will be available via diversions and West Port/West Marketgait.

The walkway between the bottom of Union Street and the railway station is also due to be be removed and replaced with a pedestrian crossing.

The junction and crossings at Nethergate will also be upgraded and the current pedestrian subway removed.
