| Dundee East SNP candidate Stewart Hosie and Dundee West candidate Joe FitzPatrick met with Scottish regiment veterans and campaigners, at The Black Watch monument at Powrie Brae.
They were joined by the Save the Scottish Regiments campaign battle bus, which will be involved in the election campaign.
The regiments campaign has endorsed the SNP in both Dundee East and Dundee West, backing them to beat Labour.
Stewart Hosie launched a scathing attack on Labour’s “betrayal” of The Black Watch and the country’s other historic regiments,
He said, “Labour has treated The Black Watch and Scotland’s other historic regiments abysmally. It is a disgrace that as they were sending them into the line of fire in Iraq, the Government was plotting to stab them in the back at home.
“Our troops have always done their best when they have been asked. It is no wonder people feel so angry about Labour’s betrayal of our historic regiments. This is our chance to get behind our troops and send a message to Labour that we will not stand for this.
“The SNP have the hardest working MPs who make Scotland matter at Westminster. The SNP will continue to campaign to save Scotland’s regiments at every opportunity. We will take the fight to Labour in the House of Commons to ensure the future of our regiments.
Joe FitzPatrick said The Black Watch was an important part of the Dundee community.
He said, “Scottish infantry regiments provide the best troops in the world bar none. A large part of that success can be attributed to the close links the regiments have with their local communities. Here in Dundee the close bond between The Black Watch and local communities has been a valuable and cherished part of city life for generations.
“Art a time of global insecurity and instability it is absolute nonsense to be scrapping our regiments.
“We need their skills and expertise like never before and we will be pulling out all the stops to save the regiments. Only a strong SNP voice can make the regiments matter at Westminster.”
Jeff Duncan of the Save the Scottish Regiments praised the SNP for giving the Scottish regiments a “strong voice at Westminster.”
He said, “They have stood up to Labour and their betrayal of our troops. Here in Dundee we will be campaigning hard for the SNP to oust Labour and send a message that we will not tolerate their actions.” |
