National event to be held in Dundee
First Minister Jack McConnell will join veterans and civic leaders in Dundee to celebrate the 60th anniversary of VE Day on May 8, writes Graeme Strachan.
Mr McConnell will attend a drumhead service in St Andrew’s Cathedral and lay a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance beside the City Churches.

Bishop Vincent Logan and the Rev Bob Wightman, the Combined Ex-Services Association padre, will conduct the service and wreath-laying ceremony.

Following the service, a VE Day party will be held in City Square before veterans, civic leaders and delegates attend a civic reception in the Marryatt Hall.

Organised by the City of Dundee Combined Ex-Services Association, the ceremony will be Scotland’s main VE Day event.

“We started it off as a Dundee event, and they have asked us to make it the national event,” said Victor Herd, president of the City of Dundee Combined Ex-Services Association.

The parade commander will be Company Sergeant Major Colin Duff of the Scots Guards.

After the ceremony, entertainer Ronnie Coburn will take charge of the entertainment in the City Square.

Dancers and singers, dressed in wartime clothes, from Margaret Mather’s Junior Showtime company will perform, while brass and pipe bands will create a carnival atmosphere.

The crowd will also be able to play some wartime games from that era.

Vintage vehicles used during the war will also be on show.

Fife Council will host a special lunch for Second World War veterans. Ex-servicemen, women and their partners are invited to attend Dunfermline’s Glen Pavilion on Wednesday, May 18.

For a ticket, contact Norma Wilson on 01592 416182. Regiment details and service numbers must be supplied.

Royal British Legion members in Dunfermline are planning to hold a VE Day remembrance parade and service on Sunday, May 8.

The service will be held at the war memorial near the abbey.

They have also organised a wartime cabaret show back at the legion in New Row, starting at 2 pm on the same day.

Events in Perth will include a veterans’ parade, led by massed pipes and drums, as well as solemn services.

Expected to be the last event of its kind, the commemoration is being organised by the 51st Highland Division Veterans Pilgrimage Association (51st HDVPA) and Perth & Kinross Council.

The events will include a welcome by the provost at a coffee reception, a day commemoration service in St John’s Kirk and, following the veterans’ parade to the North Inch, a drumhead service.

There will also be a ticket-only lunch and a social afternoon in Bell’s Sports Centre, with entertainment including a big band playing wartime classics.

Those wishing to take part must first contact Dr Renouf at 14 Windsor Gardens, Musselburgh, EH21 7LP, or by calling 0131 665 3274.

The Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre will combine its VE Day celebrations with the grand opening of its revamped displays on April 29.

Montrose and Brechin branches of the Royal British Legion Scotland are expected to meet soon to decide how they will mark the occasion, while the Angus and Mearns branch of the Normandy Veterans have planned a special weekend event and parade in Brechin for June 4 and 5.

Brechin High pupils are to erect a permanent memorial, and Rosemount Primary pupils at Hillside, Montrose, will hold a VE Day party on May 9.
