Record number Dare to enter competition
The Dundee-based computer games competition responsible for propelling students into the UK’s billion-dollar games industry has seen a record number of entries this year.
The Dare To Be Digital contest, based at Abertay University, has had 39 teams of students submit an idea for a game or educational entertainment product. Last year, 27 teams entered. But the organisers say they are not surprised at the increase since Dare includes teams from England and the Republic of Ireland for the first time this year.

The 17 teams from Scotland, 13 from England, five from the Republic and four from Northern Ireland will be judged on creativity and market potential of their ideas. Eight teams will go on to create a game prototype and business sales document to be pitched to investors at Abertay University this summer.

Teams normally have five members but this year each will have a sixth.

Dare to be Digital project manager Jackie Mckenzie said, “This year’s event is going to be particularly interesting because computer games graduates from India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and China will be helping the teams. This is a Scottish Executive initiative to encourage talented graduates into Scotland.”
