Shop manager outraged by window vandalism

A Dundee shop manager is outraged after the front window of his shop was smashed by vandals overnight.
Bob Duncan of Mossman Memorials, 148 Lochee Road, received a call this morning from an employee of Stewart’s Bakery, which is near the monumental sculptor business, informing him she had noticed the damage when she had arrived at work about 5am.

“It’s a low hole at waist height. This has happened frequently over the years, but over the past three years we’ve had a real run,” he said.

“This is the first time it’s happened this year. It’s just mindless vandalism. There’s glass everywhere. The plate of glass is expensive to replace – it’s going to cost us about £1000.

“It’s frustrating to see pure and utter vandalism which is costing businesses, not just this one, a lot of money.”

After a spate of window breakages at the shop a couple of years back when similar incidents were happening every weekend, Mr Duncan wrote to Councillor Julia Sturrock regarding the matter.

Since then Mr Duncan said there have been dramatic improvements, including street lighting and the removal of grassy mounds in Black Street, which has helped reduce the number of times the shop windows have been smashed.

“It’s pointless, mindless and expensive. It’s putting businesses out of business,” Mr Duncan continued.

“We are just getting to the end of our tether. We don’t want to go to the bother of fitting grilles. The shop-front granite would be difficult and expensive to fit grilles to. They would be cumbersome as well.”

Mr Duncan also said the police had told him that the incident had not been reported to them by anyone other than himself.
