Surprise for visitor 5000

Councillor Charles Farquhar presents a book on Joseph McKenzie to Bryan Marr, the 5000th visitor to the exhibition. Mr Marr is accompanied by his wife Kathleen and (from left) daughters Susie, Hannah and Penny.

The Joseph McKenzie photographic exhibition about old Hawkhill currently running at McManus Galleries in Dundee has attracted its 5000th visitor, who today received a copy of a book about the man.
Dundee City Council leisure and arts convener Charles Farquhar presented the signed copy of the book to Dundee man Bryan Marr, who visited the exhibition with his wife Kathleen and daughters Susie, Hannah and Penny.

McKenzie’s highly acclaimed Hawkhill: Death of a Living Community exhibition has been attracting more than 400 visitors a day since it opened on April 2.

Councillor Farquhar said, “A powerful attraction is the sheer nostalgia for a place and way of life that has completely passed away.

“Also the portraits of the people in the area — children, old people and demolition men — are absolutely brilliant.”
