Letters - 15 April 2005
OAPS just waste other folks’ time
WHY IS it without fail, if I need to call into a bank on my dinner break, it is mobbed with OAPs, usually with bags of coppers?
People in employment only get so long for their dinner breaks. I think it is wrong for OAPs to be wasting the time of cashiers when they have nothing else to do but sit on buses or drink cups of tea in their favourite cafes.

Surely there should be something implemented to only allow them in between hours where people are not going to be held up while on their dinner break.

Don’t even start me regards buses. — Banking Bob.

It costs money to save on gas

Jean Hendrie with her gas bills.

I RECEIVED a gas bill on April 1 for 57p for the period 22.9.04 to 24.3.05.

Being April Fools Day, I thought it was a joke.

This bill was from Scottish Hydro-Electric.

Next day I got an amended bill for 82p for period 15.9.04 to 29.3.05.

This promised me a discount of 1p if paid by April 12.

Now, due to a previous experience, I know I can’t pay a bill under £1 by cash or cheque.

This means I have to pay an extra 18p to make it up to £1 before I get a discount of 1p.

Being really amused by this, I have sent them the enclosed poem.

It might amuse your other readers too. It is called Don’t Delay, This Offer Won’t Stay: —

Oh Dearie me,

I’m really feeling blue,

Cos I’ve been promised 1p discount

And don’t know what to do.

Of course, I could play cards with it,

For it is useless for the loo.

And it really cost a lot more than that,

Just to send this poem to you.

Still, thank you for the offer,

Your kindness touched my heart,

Knowing how sad you’ll be,

When the penny and you must part.

But should you decide to send it,

I’ll put it in a frame,

And maybe the Hydro’s generosity

Will bring it WORLD FAME.

Jean Hendrie, Broughty Ferry.

P.S. I only have a gas cooker.

These silences should be banned
I THINK that the condemnation of Hearts fans for not observing a minute’s silence for the Pope prior to Sunday’s cup-tie against Celtic is disgraceful.

I am sure if the Jambos had been playing any side outwith one of the Old Firm they would have stood silent.

Fans have had to put up for years with sectarian chants from the Glasgow clubs’ fans.

Sunday’s incident was more about disrespect to Celtic fans than the Pope.

Rangers fans were clearly heard chanting derogatory remarks at the League Cup Final about IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands on live TV, yet there was no public condemnation after that.

Perhaps all minute silences should be banned at football games as political correctness will never catch on on the terraces. — George Aimer, Kinghorne Road, Dundee.

Missing mail
WHAT IS happening to our mail? My neighbours and I are puzzled. We thought we were missing a few letters, but have never been told hundreds of Dundee City Council letters have not been delivered over the last months.

Many of us have received final demands from companies and the council, then been told at least two letters were sent.

Royal Mail says it can’t trace items unless they have a special recorded number.

Royal Mail should know bread-line families are facing high interest surcharges and court orders because of this.

Does every letter have to be sent by special mail? — St Clement’s Place Resident.

Ask why not successful
I HAVE been reading the letters about the selection process for joining Tayside Fire Brigade.

My partner, an electrician to trade, has for 13 years been trying to get a career with the fire brigade.

After his third final interview and his third refusal he wrote to ask for feedback. In return he received a letter stating the points on which he was refused.

On his fourth attempt he looked out the letter and took on board the points it raised. He worked on these and was recruited. I urge anyone who is unsuccessful to write and ask why.

Maybe failed candidates just don’t know what is expected.

A firefighter is not just about putting out fires. — Dundee Reader.

Sour grapes
MY SON attended the much-criticised Rangers Roadshow in Dundee.

He has also attended Dundee and Dundee United coaching schools.

Rangers coaches spent time looking at each child to see strong and weak points so they could help them. They also made it fun while teaching.

I would recommend the course to anyone and my son can’t wait for the summer roadshow.

I think it’s sour grapes from Dundee and Dundee United as their clubs scout for players in other parts of the country. — Happy Mother and Son.
