| The much-sought-after cover, which also celebrates the 700th anniversary of Sir William Wallace’s death, was shown off at the premises of sponsors Winters Pioneer Ltd by managing director Pamela Kane and president of the society, Professor David Stirrups.
The society is the second oldest of its kind in Scotland and is the only one to have retained its name for 100 years.
In 1905, 13 men met and decided to form the organisation after responding to an advertisement in The Dundee Advertiser inviting “any who are interested in philately to attend a meeting”.
Instrumental in setting up the first joint meeting of the Scottish Philatelic Societies, the society has had many prominent members over the years, including famous philatelist John Christie, who was secretary from 1909 to 1924, and Dr A.E. Kidd, who was president between 1921 and 1938.
Designed by Ross McVinnie, a student of the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, the commemorative cover has been sponsored by Winters Pioneer Ltd, a printing firm.
Only 300 of the covers have been produced and they will be on sale at Perth’s Dewar’s Centre on Saturday, where the Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies is mereting.
The covers can be ordered by sending a cheque or postal order to Colin Campbell, 11 Denoon Terrace, Dundee, DD2 2EL, and made payable to Dundee and District Philatelic Society. Ordinary covers at priced at £2 and signed versions are £3. |
