Letters - 14 April 2005
Sleepless in Monifieth
ONCE AGAIN people unfortunate enough to live in Reform Street, Monifieth, have had to listen to around 20 to 30 drunken teenagers causing havoc on a Friday night (April 8).
Once again our cars were kicked and our wing mirrors were pulled off.

Although this is a regular occurrence, once again not a policeman was in sight. Are there actually any policemen in Monifieth?

Perhaps they are too busy chasing after the other anti-socials who tear around in noisy cars at all hours of the night? However, they too never seem to be caught. — Sleepless.

Eyesore disgrace

The broken fence at the former garage in Downfield, Dundee.

I AM write regarding what was once a garage/ lock-up in the Downfield area of Strathmartine Road in Dundee.

This was kept very clean and tidy until a few years ago. Since then the place has become a disgrace, and is now open plan as the fence collapsed months ago.

It is a haven for youngsters and one of these days one is going to get hurt as there are bricks, glass, gas bottles, etc lying about.

Perhaps the Tele can print a picture and this will prompt the owner to do something to this eyesore. — Fed Up Resident.

Scourge of football . . .
IT IS always with a sense of foreboding that I read the Tele’s Club Notes about supporters’ buses leaving at ridiculously early times for games in Glasgow.

Leaving Dundee at 9am, supporters will arrive in Glasgow at no later than 11am, allowing them far too much time to consume alcohol.

Equally concerning is the number of Celtic and Rangers buses that arrive early in Dundee for matches.

I remember that many years ago these buses were not allowed into the city until two hours before the match.

This restriction should be re-introduced as the drink-fuelled behaviour of Old Firm fans continues to be disgraceful.

It is often said that religious bigotry is the scourge of Scottish football. However, I am of the opinion that the obsession with alcohol is every bit as bad. — M. Sober, Dundee.

System a joke
I TOTALLY agree with letter writer Mr Black’s comment that Dundee’s traffic system is a joke.

Every time I cross the Murraygate at Commercial Street, there is at least one private car driving north or south.

It is only a matter of time before a pedestrian is killed.

The police and traffic wardens must know that this is happening, but do nothing about it. — Road Safety.

Struggled with buggy
I BOARDED a Travel Dundee’s number seven bus with my three-month-old daughter in her pram.

I was told by the driver I had to take her out of her pram and to fold it.

As I was on my own I found this very difficult and the driver made no attempt to help. Also there were no spaces for the buggy. — April Duguit.

Hard to swallow
IF YOUR letter writer was indeed told by a taxi driver he had no fuel for a trip to Carnoustie, he should have been reported to the authorities.

I find this very hard to swallow, given that the number of taxis in Dundee has nearly doubled. — The Shepster.
