Swanning around!

Two of the “invaders” who were wandering about on Pitkerro Road, with rescue services discussing tactics in the background.

A trio of interloping swans caused a major ruffling of feathers at Dundee’s Stobsmuir ponds today, and in turn caused problems for traffic on Pitkerro Road.
The swans, which apparently arrived together during the morning and settled on the “Swanny” pond nearest the busy road, upset the resident breeding pair who gave them the bird and sent them flying from their patch.

Unfortunately, the new arrivals only high-tailed it on to the road into the face of oncoming traffic, which was forced to stop to prevent injury to the large birds.

Dundee City Council leisure and parks staff alerted the SSPCA and countryside rangers from Baxter Park decided they would have to remove the interlopers and cart them off to a safer spot.

Senior urban ranger David Hughes said, “We will capture the three new swans and take them off to Broughty Ferry. It’s a much bigger area there so there’s not the same territory to defend and the swans live in harmony together in a large group.”
