Perth horse tipped for Grand National
A Perth-owned horse is attracting huge interest ahead of the Grand National at Aintree next month, writes Dave Lord.
There is a real buzz surrounding Strong Resolve, owned by Perth syndicate Fair City Flyers.

Although the exact identity of the syndicate members is not known, it is believed to comprise of between eight and 12 local businessmen.

Today punters could typically expect to receive a price of 20 to one for the horse to win the showcase race, but experts said that was sure to tumble over the next two weeks.

Local bookies confirmed there had been a flurry of local interest — while National tippers spoke of a horse well worth a punt.

Excitement is certainly high within Perth, as one Fair City punter told the Evening Telegraph today.

“People round here are very excited about Strong Resolve,” he said. “The horse has done really quite well recently, particularly at a race down in Kelso.

“I would say it is worth a few quid of anyone’s money for the Grand National — especially at 20 to one.

“I certainly plan to put my money where my mouth is and will not be alone — Strong Resolve has a real chance.”

The Perth-owned horse is trained by Lucinda Russell, a woman with a significant track record in the horse-racing world.

Several national experts have picked the horse from the notoriously big Grand National field as having a realistic chance of making an impact come April 9. Local bookmakers are certainly aware of strong local interest, with staff at Ladbrokes saying the horse was already looking like a popular Perth bet.

“Strong Resolve is known as a local horse so we always take quite a lot of money in Perth,” said a spokesman. “There is quite a buzz about the National and there has been a fair bit of local backing already.

“The price is 20 to one at the moment but that will almost certainly drop before the big day.”

Whatever happens, come the National one thing is certain — Perth race fans will be holding their collective breath as Strong Resolve comes under starter’s orders.
