| The team behind the Kelloggs Cornflakes Great Walk 2005, which takes place in Dundee on Wednesday, May 18, is asking friends, relatives or colleagues to write nominating people in the community who have gone that extra mile to help others — such as people who have voluntarily led, supported or saved projects in the area — to star in the prestigious event.
One person will be selected from the nominations and will be handed the honour of carrying the baton along the course.
Dundee East MP Iain Luke will launch the initiative in the city and is urging people to join in the 10k (six miles) walk.
With only 29% of people in the UK taking regular exercise, children and adults of all ages are being encouraged to take part.
The event, in conjunction with Grampian TV through ITV’s Britain on the Move campaign, is designed to encourage the nation to get active, raise awareness of the need for healthy living and at the same time raise over £1 million for hundreds of charities and school and community projects throughout Scotland.
One woman, 38-year-old Karen Churches, will walk from John O’Groats to Lands End, taking in a walk from Belfast to Dublin and around the Republic of Ireland. Prime Minister Tony Blair, Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, rower Sir Steve Redgrave, diet expert Rosemary Conley and resident This Morning doctor Chris Steele are all supporting the event.
