NHS focus on Dunfermline expansion
Health officials are continuing to look at the possible health service implications of the proposed Dunfermline eastern expansion, which is expected to swell the area’s population by 10,000 in the next few years.
At today’s NHS Fife board meeting in Cupar, chief executive George Brechin acknowledged there were housing expansions forecast across Fife, with implications for GP services.

The Dunfermline expansion, instigated by the number of workers now wanting to commute from Fife to Edinburgh, however, was the “biggest single expansion” in the region and therefore required special attention.

The proposed eastern expansion was coupled with six to eight GP surgeries in the Dunfermline area already near capacity. Health service investment was already taking place in other parts of Fife such as Kirkcaldy, Burntisland and St Andrews.

At a time when Fife’s draft local plans are looking at possible housing developments in the region over the next 10 years, Mr Brechin noted it was not just about “counting houses”, but about population dynamics.

Demographic changes suggested there were going to be more smaller sized households as the traditional family unit became rarer.
