| Two leading members of a Russian cosmonaut team will be touching down in Tayside next week as part of a ground mission to inform people about life in space.
Dr Alexander Martynov, head of the foreign relations department at the Administration of Korolev, and Mr Alexander Volkov, commander of the cosmonauts team at the Russian Training Centre for Cosmonauts, will talk to school children and members of the public during three days of talks throughout the Angus, Dundee and Perth and Kinross regions.
They will share their experiences of life in space, their knowledge of the supporting technologies and the reality of a manned mission to Mars, as well as other space related issues
The prestigious visit is being organised by the Tayside STEM Partnership and sponsored by the three local education authorities of Angus, Dundee and Perth and Kinross. A public lecture is also being supported by the University of Dundee.
“The visit to Tayside by these top Russian space experts provides an excellent opportunity for people to increase their understanding of the subject, and offers a rare opportunity to ask questions of two individuals with direct experience of space travel,” said Prof. John Palfreyman, head of the School of Contemporary Sciences at the University of Abertay Dundee and chair of the Tayside STEM Partnership.
“A manned mission to Mars is a real possibility for the next generation and it is visits like this that will inspire the next generation of young people to find out more about the exciting future of space science.”
Members of the public will have the opportunity to find out about a manned mission to Mars at a presentation on Monday, March 21, at 7pm in the Tower Lecture Theatre, University of Dundee. Admission is free. |
