Kirkcaldy Old Kirk set for interior makeover
One of Fife’s best known churches, the Old Kirk in Kirkcaldy, is to be given a makeover.
The work, expected to last up to six months, is due to start in the next few weeks and will see major interior changes.

Langtonians and visitors will have their last chance to see the interior of the town’s oldest church — there have been 760 years of continuous worship on the site — in its present form next week when it will be open on Friday and Saturday between noon and 4pm.

Church officials hope those with fond memories will take the opportunity of a last look around the sanctuary before the builders move in.

Consecrated in 1244, the Old Kirk is the earliest site of Christianity in Kirkcaldy, and the thick walls of the ancient tower have already witnessed many changes in town and church, from Roman Catholic to Episcopal and now Presbyterian forms of worship.

Attached to the tower is the present sanctuary, built in 1807, and its fine stained glass windows will be retained. However, the last remaining piece of the original horseshoe gallery will disappear, along with floor and pews custom-built for the last renovation in 1968 when the church was renovated under the leadership of Rev John Sim. It was restored after vandals set the building on fire in 1986.

The present interior of the church will end its life on a high note with Kirkcaldy Choral Union’s concert of “The Armed Man” on the evening of March 20.
