Lorraine’s life-saver plea

TV personality and Dundee University Rector Lorraine Kelly today appealed for Dundonians to register as organ donors to mark the 10th anniversary of the UK national Organ Donor Register.
At a ceremony in the Ian Low Centre at Ninewells Medical School, the popular GMTV presenter said she believed most people would gladly be organ donors, but it was something many folk just didn’t think about.

“It’s always been something I’ve supported, and we often feature people on GMTV who have had organ transplants,” she said.

“It’s so sad that someone normally has to lose their life to give someone else a chance.

“But often it gives an awful lot of comfort to the relatives of the deceased people that their organs can help improve the quality of life for someone else.

“I think we should have to opt out rather than opt in by having to register as donors.

“It is heartbreaking that so many chances are lost just because people don’t think about it, or relatives haven’t been told their loved ones want to donate their organs.”

Lorraine also cut a ceremonial cake, donated by local bakers Fisher and Donaldson, to mark the 10th anniversary of the Organ Donor Register, which now has 12,048,838 people in the UK registered as donors.
