T in the Park sold out in record time

An almighty scramble through the Internet and by telephone for this year’s T in the Park tickets has seen the massive event at Balado sold out with five months still to go (writes Alan Wilson, Grapevine writer).
More than 65,000 tickets for each day on Saturday and Sunday, July 10 and 11, have been snapped up, and thousands of music fans who didn’t move quickly enough have been left disappointed by the news.

The writing was on the wall as early as last July when a third of the tickets were put on sale the day after last year’s festival and were snapped up within a few weeks, before a single act had been announced.

The remaining two thirds went on sale last Saturday and festival organiser Geoff Ellis predicted they would sell out within a fortnight. The unprecedented demand, however, has seen that prediction eclipsed by the news late yesterday afternoon that the last of the briefs had disappeared — around the same time that Scottish favourites Travis were being announced as a welcome addition to the line-up.

With fans forking out £46.50 for a day ticket and £97 for a weekend ticket with camping, this means that more than £5,000,000 has already been banked by the organisers.

Last year, tickets sold out 10 weeks before the event, but that record now pales into insignificance.

There’s still a glimmer of hope, though, for those without tickets after festival organisers Big Day Out hinted the capacity could be raised slightly, advising people to register at www.tinthepark.com, as any potential availability will be communicated there first.

With over 120 acts playing across nine stages to 65,000 music fans from all over the world, this early sell-out confirms the festival’s consistent popularity and stature on the world musical calendar. Chief executive Geoff Ellis said, “We did think this year’s event would sell slightly earlier. However, this is way beyond our expectations.

“We are extremely proud that fans are so excited about T in the Park that they have made absolutely sure their place at Balado is booked for 2005, and we will deliver one of the greatest events yet for them in July.”

Scottish Citylink will be providing a shuttle service from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth from Friday, July 8 to Monday, July 11. There will also be services from Inverness, Aberdeen and Dundee to the festival site at Balado, near Kinross.

Tickets for the services are already on sale and an early bird discount of 10% will available for those who pre-book before April 30.
