| Fire appliances are often delayed from leaving, as box junctions outside are grid-locked with traffic. He says that while the issue was more of a problem outside the Kingsway East Station, incidents had arisen outside others.
He added, “Recently appliances responding to a range of incidents have been obstructed from crossing the Kingsway.
“Most recently, an articulated lorry was blocking the exit, and appliances had to travel down a dedicated fire service slip road, then access the roundabout, before travelling back up the Kingsway to the incident,
“This obviously increased the travel time, and this can mean the difference between life and death.
“I would urge motorists to consider how they would feel should it be their property on fire, or a loved one trapped in a vehicle when they are obstructing our vehicles travelling to a call-out.”
Inspector Gordon Taylor, head of road policing in Dundee, said, “Box junctions are there for a good reason — to keep traffic flowing and to keep the area clear.
“If the box junction outside a fire station is blocked this can cause unnecessary delays, when every minute is potentially a life saved. Drivers must not enter the box junction until their exit road or lane is clear. We will be working closely with Tayside Fire Brigade to resolve the issue. Anyone caught abusing the box junctions will be dealt with appropriately.” |
