Letters - 20 January 2005
Decent citizens come second
TO CONFIRM your letter writer Dundonian’s worst fears, it seems crime does pay. The law-abiding citizens in this country have fewer rights than the perpetrators of crime.
Heaven help you if you injure a burglar carrying out his business in your house.

I regard the term “reasonable force” to mean I can do whatever I have to ensure the criminal cannot move until the police arrive, regardless of the severity.

Fortunately, I am a fit, middle-aged male. Therefore, I have no doubt I will end up in court defending myself if I am unfortunate enough to confront someone breaking-in at my house. I will risk it.

Incidentally, how can an 80-year-old woman exert “reasonable force” without some form of weapon?

The country is in disarray when decent citizens come second. — Aberdeen Angus.

Concentrate on issues
EMBARRASSING, NAIVE and pointless are words that could easily describe the SNP’s latest poster campaign.

Instead of concentrating on the issues and promoting their own policies, they prefer to make a personal attack on First Minister Jack McConnell.

So much for leader-in-waiting Nicola Sturgeon’s repeated calls for Labour to “raise its game”.

Is this really all the Scottish people have to look forward to now the SNP leader is in permanent exile in London? — D. A. B.

Arcade angels
I READ Mrs Nicoll’s letter about her memories of Dundee’s City Arcade and some of the stalls that were there.

My memory is of paper “scraps”, which could be bought for a few pennies from, I think, Cathy McCabe’s stall.

My favourites were the angels. Many hours were spent exchanging these with friends.

The scraps were kept in pristine condition in a book.

There was a game where you opened and closed the book at random and you could lose your special scrap.

I can’t remember the rules. Maybe someone can. — M. Heenan.

Hilltown invitation
THIS IS an open invitation to the Hilltown community in Dundee to come and view applications for the Community Regeneration Fund.

A meeting will be held on January 20, at the Mark Henderson Centre at 6 pm. All welcome. — Martyn Sloan, Chair, Community Council, c/o Maxwelltown Information Centre, 121-123 Hilltown, Dundee.

Wage comparison
IT WAS suggested the working population should have an extra day’s holiday per year. An employer said this would mean the loss of £100 for the day. The state retirement pension is less than £100 per week. — Short.

Wallace connection
I READ on a web site that William Wallace was educated in Dundee and taught to fight by a group of Knights Templar. It also mentions the Templars had a connection with the High Kirk. Can anyone expand on this? — Seeker.

No purpose
AFTER THE latest embarrassment from a Royal, isn’t it time this outdated institution was abolished? They serve no useful purpose. Let’s have a referendum and vote them out. — G. D.
