NEW DEAL FOR McINTYRE
Dundee United have given striker Jim McIntyre the chance to extend his time at Tannadice (writes Tom Duthie).
This season’s top scorer with nine goals, McIntyre has 18 months of his current deal still to run and boss Ian McCall wants to add on another year.

“Jim has been superb in my time at the club and, the way he’s going this season, I’d expect him to maybe reach something like 15 goals,” said Ian.

“His average here is a goal every two-and-a-half games, which is excellent in the modern game and I feel that he deserves to be rewarded and that’s why I’ve offered him another year.”

McIntyre’s initial response has encouraged his manager and the pair will probably sit down next week in an attempt to finalise the detail of the new contract.

Meanwhile, key Dundee United midfielder Barry Robson will miss two important SPL fixtures in the next few weeks because of suspension.

Robson will have to sit out the Tannadice derby against Dundee on Saturday week and, after returning for the CIS and Scottish Cup clashes with Rangers and Queen of the South, will complete his ban in the meeting with fellow-strugglers Livingston next month.

While he is happy with the cover available for his wide man, Tangerines gaffer McCall admitted losing the former Inverness Caley man would be a blow.

“I don’t think Barry has had the kind of outstanding season he did for us last year, but he is still an important player who puts in a lot of work for us,” said Ian.

“If you take Monday night’s cup-tie at Gretna as an example, I didn’t think he had his best game for us, but he scored a goal, won a penalty and worked hard up and down the left.

“He always makes a contribution and, in a split second, can produce a bit of magic that can win games, so he is someone I like to have in the team. However, we are going to miss him for a couple of games and that just means it will be an opportunity for someone else to come in and do well for us.”

Someone who might get the chance to come into the starting line-up at Dunfermline this weekend is new signing Lee Mair, who has impressed in his two substitute appearances so far.

“I thought he was very composed when he came on at a tricky time of the tie against Gretna and, since he’s arrived, he has looked an intelligent footballer. He definitely has a chance for Saturday,” added Ian.

United are expecting an offer from Scunthorpe for available striker Collin Samuel, who has done well on a trial down south this week.

One barrier to a deal being done could be the renewal of the Trinidadian’s work permit. He will have to re-apply for one if he gets a new employer and his lack of appearances at both club and international level since he moved to Tannadice from Falkirk could then become a problem.

Fans should note the Tennent’s Scottish Cup tie in Dumfries on February 5 will not be all ticket.

SANCHO STRUGGLING TO FACE JAMBOS
Dundee’s Brent Sancho is struggling to regain his fitness in time to make Saturday’s Dens Park meeting with Hearts (writes Tom Duthie).
The Trinidad defender had to sit out last weekend’s win over Inverness Caley Thistle because of a knee injury that has been giving him problems for the past few weeks and it could sideline him again.

By today, he was doing only light work in training, leaving boss Jim Duffy to admit he was still a concern.

“I think he has to be considered extremely doubtful for Saturday. It’s a thing with his knee that has been flaring up after games, but, this time, instead of taking just a couple of days to settle down, it has been bothering him for over a week.

“He might still make it, but he is struggling and time is running out for him.”

Garry Brady will make the squad after returning to full training for the first time since the start of the month, though he is unlikely to be sharp enough to be considered for the starting line-up.

Away from his preparations for the weekend fixture, Jim was continuing his efforts to sign up players whose contracts expire in the summer.

Today, he was having further talks with goalkeeper Derek Soutar’s agent and he is also awaiting a response from young defender Callum Macdonald to the offer of a contract that was made last week.

While there is still some negotiating to be done, signs are encouraging that the pair will follow the lead of Steven Robb and Stephen McNally, who penned new deals a week ago.

SAINTS ON BUG ALERT
St Johnstone manager John Connolly is keeping a watchful eye on his squad in case any more fall victim to the sickness bug which has hit the club (writes James Masson).
Although none of his first-team men are affected at the moment, several have been hit by it in the past couple of weeks and John is hoping it has now cleared.

“You never know with this bug,” said John. “It seems to hit people overnight and I’m just hoping that no others go down with it.”

New signings David Cowan and Robert Sloan were training with their new team-mates today and both will be in the pool for Saturday’s home game against Partick.

John watched the Jags go down 2-1 to Hearts in the Tennent’s Scottish Cup at Tynecastle last night and was impressed by the Firhill side.

“They will definitely be a much tougher proposition than the last time we faced them,” John warned.
