Dundee set for university ‘rag week’
Dundee University ‘rag week’ is set to go ahead at the end of next month and a city centre parade on February 27 will again signal the start of the charity event.

The Dundee University Charities Committee is in the early stages of planning the week-long extravaganza to raise money for four nominated charities – the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH), third world charity Gorta and Tayside Institute for Cardiovascular Research.

Fancy dress will be the order of the day as the city centre parade kicks off festivities at 2pm, starting from Sensation science centre and culminating at the university sports union.

It is hoped local dignitaries, including Lord Provost John Letford, and university rector Lorraine Kelly will be in attendance.

Last year was the first time students had organised such a parade through the centre of the city and organisers say this one will be even bigger.

“Last year was the first year we started doing this type of parade so it was lot harder then getting things going,” said parade co-ordinator Wendy McBurnie.

“We have more people now and more people now know so we are hoping for an even bigger event.”

The OTC pipe band will lead the procession along with the Dundee University Brass Band. Each of the nominated charities will also make an appearance in featured floats.

As the parade arrives back at the sports union, a jam-packed family fun day is planned with various games and activities for children. Musical entertainment is to be provided by members of the university band society.

Local charities shared an estimated £600 from last year’s parade and the organisers hope to significantly exceed that figure this time round.

Throughout the rest of the week, social and sporting events should help boost funds even further.
