A Dundee-based international relief and development charity has launched a fundraising campaign to aid the victims of the Asian tsunami disaster.
As an immediate response to the devastation, Signpost International of Hilltown is raising cash to send an aid container full of items such as tents, cooking stoves and toiletries to Sri Lanka next week.

The charity is also embarking on a longer-term fundraising appeal for the disaster victims and is already working with aid agencies in Asia to identify areas where a lasting contribution can be made to community reconstruction.

The funds will be used to rebuild safe and secure homes for the disaster victims and to help fund social action programmes in the region.

Signpost volunteers will be organising a collectionin the Wellgate shopping centre.

There will also be a collection at Dundee FC’s home game against Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Dens this weekend.

Executive Director Kerry Dixon said today, “The immediate public response has been great but the needs of the people affected will continue to grow with time.”

The Signpost campaign has received the full backing of Dundee East MP Iain Luke.

He said, “I am pleased to give all the support I can to assist the tremendous work being undertaken by Signpost International and by the other relief organisations in light of the human tragedy and devastation caused by the tsunami in Asia.”

Anyone wishing to give to the appeal should forward their donations to Signpost International, Mark Henderson Centre, Ann Street, Dundee, DD3 7TH.

Anyone wishing to volunteer to help with the fundraising effort is asked to contact Roger Boon on 01382 868845.
