Flooding motion call
More should be done to address the constant fear of Perthshire residents who are threatened by flooding, an MSP today claimed.

North Tayside parliamentarian John Swinney has tabled a motion on the subject, saying increased Government funding is vitally important.

Earlier this week the MSP visited a number of Perthshire communities hit by devastating floods.

“After visiting the areas which had been affected by flooding following the recent rainfalls, I felt that it was crucial to raise this issue in parliament,” he said.

“I believe that it is vital that pressure is put on the Scottish Executive to ensure that funding is put in place for flood prevention measures in Perthshire. We cannot have residents constantly living with uncertainty over the future of their homes and businesses.”

Although the Fair City itself seems to have escaped the worst effects of the rapidly rising waters, other areas remain at risk.

Mr Swinney said, “So far it has been shown the flood defence mechanisms in Perth have been successful therefore it should be the case that other parts of Perthshire are equally protected.

“I am certain MSPs of all parties will support this motion and I hope that with continued pressure we can see funding similar to that promised to Edinburgh provided for Perthshire.”
