90mph winds close bridge

After the Tay Road Bridge was reopened for cars, this sign in Dock Street, Dundee, tells drivers it was still closed to some vehicles.

The Tay Road Bridge was closed completely for over two hours this morning, as winds of more than 90mph swept the estuary, writes Steven Bell.
Bridge control in Dundee took the decision for safety reasons at 6 am, and it was after 8 am before any cars were allowed to cross.

A spokesman said, “The situation at the moment is that the bridge is open, but not to high-sided vehicles. The walkway is shut.

“The bridge was closed from 6 am to 8.15 am, when the wind was over 90 mph, but it is about 60 mph just now and is meant to drop a bit yet.”

The spokesman said they had been inundated with calls from commuters asking whether they would be able to make the crossing.

At Dundee Airport, the wind was blowing “straight down the runway” and was not expected to have any effect on services.

Police in the city were not reporting any major damage as a result of the gusts.

The Forth Road Bridge was also closed to high-sided vehicles this morning.

Fallen trees in Glasgow and the Borders also led to road closures in these areas.

Despite the weather moderating by late morning, gales were forecast to return overnight and tomorrow morning, according to Gareth Harvey, of the PA WeatherCentre.
