Poetry plan in bid to help tsunami victims

A Dundee teenager today urged the city’s young people to use their creative talents to help the victims of the Asian tsunami disaster, writes Graeme Strachan.
Anna MacDonald (13) is poet in residence for local youth arts charity KenART, who are running a poetry competition for people between the ages of four and 24.

The theme for the competition is Home: Here and There, and several entries from each age category will be published in a booklet to be sold in aid of the disaster relief.

In order to encourage entries from around the city, several schools will also be getting a visit from a mysterious character known only as Doctor Poetry.

“It's very important that each person uses whatever talents they have to help relieve the suffering,” said Anna.

“This project means that even children and young people who have nothing to give financially can still offer something in terms of help and I hope that they will do so.”

However, KenART is desperately seeking support regarding the printing of the book.

“Our initial budget covers very few copies of the book,” said a spokesman for KenART. “We are looking for local printers to come forward and support the printing of the booklet so we can distribute it more widely and raise more money for the appeal.”

KenART also has a few other fundraising projects under way for the disaster relief including a benefit concert and a fashion show at the Hilton Hotel in February, which will showcase the work of local designers and artists.

Anyone who can offer help with the printing of the KenART book or any aspect of the fashion show should get in touch with Gillian Ferguson on 01382 220330 or via e-mail at poetry_relief@msn.com.
