A Dundee couple celebrated their diamond wedding today more than 60 years since they first met at the pictures.
Joseph and Margaret Docherty set eyes on each other over a blockbuster film at the Victoria Cinema in Victoria Road and later went on to marry in St Mary’s Lochee church.

The couple, who received a telegram from the Queen today, have four children, two girls and two boys.

Their youngest son, Michael, travelled from his home in Reading to help his parents celebrate the occasion.

Mr Docherty worked in a canon factory during the war, before spending many years as a brush salesman until he had to take early retirement due to ill health.

During the war, Mrs Docherty worked in a munitions factory and was then employed as a machinist sewing sandbags until she had her first child.

After raising the couple’s children, Mrs Docherty returned to work as a cleaner at St John’s High School until her retrial after 21 years of service.

Lord Provost John Letford visited the couple to offer his congratulations before they marked the milestone with a family meal at Piperdam.

Another Dundee couple celebrated their diamond wedding today with a visit from Lord Provost John Letford and Deputy Lord Provost Charles Farquhar.

William (89) and Mary (83) Anderson, of Lochee, met at a dance in the city and were married at St James’ Church in Broughty Ferry. They have one daughter, Joyce. The couple were presented with a card and a bouquet by Mr Letford.
