| Workers from Eighteen and Under today celebrated winning the International Safety Award with Lord Provost John Letford at the charity’s premises in Victoria Road.
The award, issued jointly by Women in Cities International and the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime, was presented to Laurie Matthew, co-ordinator of Eighteen and Under, at an international conference in Bogota, Columbia.
It recognises the work done by the charity over the past 10 years, not only in supporting children who have been abused, but also in developing the multi-award winning VIP (Violence Is Preventable) safety project.
It has resulted in 80,000 children across Scotland being given advice on how to stay safe.
The VIP project was set up to educate children about the risk of violence and abuse.
It won a Community Care Child Protection award in 2000 and has continued to collect accolades both national and international over the past four years.
The material produced has become part of the curriculum for many secondary schools.
Lord Provost John Letford said, “Dundee was proud to take a national lead offering all our young people the opportunity to know and understand more about keeping themselves safe thereby underlining Dundee’s commitment to its young people.
“I am delighted to be able to join workers from and supporters of Eighteen and Under in these celebrations.
“Dundee is indeed very proud to be taking what is now an international lead in teaching children and young people to keep themselves safe.” |
