Councillor dreaming of a green Christmas

Dundee City Council is urging the city’s residents to help make their dream of a green Christmas come true.
While many people are checking weather forecasts for the possibility of snow on Christmas Day, Councillor Julie Sturrock today called for people to make sure they spare a thought for the environment.

The environmental and sustainability convener visited the Marchbanks Recycling Centre this morning and urged Dundonians to recycle their wrapping paper, cards and real Christmas trees once the festivities end.

She said, “Dundee City Council provides recycling centres and points across the city where people can hand in cards and wrapping paper in January.

“There are also card collection points at WH Smith and Tesco which raise money for the Woodland Trust’s Trees for All scheme.

“People can also put their cards and wrapping paper in blue bins for collection after the New Year.

“I would encourage people to use local facilities to help our recycling efforts — they have responded enthusiastically in the past and I am sure they will continue to do so.”

Cllr Sturrock added, “Dundee is Scotland’s recycling city and we want to keep working to maintain the momentum.

“We have been awarded £26 million from the Scottish executive’s Strategic Waste Fund to improve services in the future. Christmas is a time when households produce a lot of waste and it is important we encourage people to recycle as much as possible.”

The city council will be collecting Christmas trees for free after the holidays. The dead trees will then be turned into Discovery Compost at Riverside.

Anyone who wants their tree collected should call 432750 after January 5 to arrange an uplift. Alternatively they can take them to Marchbanks, Riverside or Baldovie recycling centres.
