Council moves to reassure care home children
Dundee City Council today dismissed speculation that youngsters being housed in a city childcare home will spend Christmas alone after it was announced the facility would close temporarily.
The Duncan Place residential facility in Kirkton is being shut down for two months because of staff shortages, forcing the three children at the home into temporary accommodation.

Concerns were raised that the youngsters were facing a bleak Christmas without any familiar faces but the council have moved to dispel any notion that they would be scattered indiscriminately.

A spokesperson said, “Staff and the three young people housed in Duncan Place have been informed of the temporary closure of the facility.

“The young people will be accompanied to their new accommodation by social care officers who have been closely involved in their care at Duncan Place.

Staff crises are being experienced in social work departments across the country and the city council said it is working vigorously to strengthen its own social care staff.

“The decision to temporarily close Duncan Place for two months was taken because of staff shortages,” continued the spokesperson.

“The city council has to meet staffing levels agreed by the Care Commission for a registered residential childcare unit. These standards are in place to ensure the appropriate level of care for the young people.

“The three residents of Duncan Place are being placed in new accommodation which will meet their specific needs.

“Dundee City Council is currently in the middle of a major recruiting exercise for social care staff and is confident Duncan Place will be re-opened at the end of February.”
