Reaching out from Fintry to Holy Land

Over 2000 years ago a child was born in poverty in Bethlehem, and a group of Dundee children are learning that, two centuries later, some of their peers still face incredible deprivation in the birthplace of Jesus.
The children, who attend different schools in the Fintry area of Dundee, are members of the Word of Life group that meets every week at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. As well as learning about the story of the Nativity, they have also established links with Terra Sancta Schools for boys and girls in the Palestinian city run by an Order of French nuns.

Forfar woman Monica Stansfeld, following a visit to the Holy Land a number of years ago, established a trust which buys olive wood goods, produced by Palestinian craftsmen, then sends the money back to them. She also raises money for the schools, and the Fintry kids have been helping her, in the run up to Christmas, with that effort.

Monica said, “The Fintry kids have responded superbly and I think it is great to help them make links with the children of Bethlehem.”
