Glebe Street Kids on song for charity

Glebelands Primary pupils followed in the footsteps of pop stars such as Robbie Williams and Dido when they recorded their own Band Aid style charity song.
Some 50 P7 youngsters were at Dundee College’s Graham Street music complex to record their Christmas tune.

The number, Merry Christmas from Peru, was written by the pupils and was inspired by a school project on the South American country.

The group of young artists went along to the college’s £150,000 recording studio to lay the track down with the help of production experts.

It is hoped the school will be able to increase an already sizable sum of funds raised to help Peru’s street children — an increasing problem in Latin American countries.

Lecturer Mike Brown, who has over 20 years experience as a recording engineer, said, “We are really delighted to be able to offer the use of the technology at the college music complex.

“I was really impressed with the high standard the pupils displayed whilst performing.”

The Glebe Street Kids, as the pupils have named themselves, have already raised over £850 through charity activities, which will cover the cost of education for 15 children living on the streets of cities such as Lima.

While the budding young stars wrote the lyrics and designed the CD cover, Gordon Moir contributed the music.

During the song, the pupils will sing as a whole, accompanied by a soloist from within the group.

An initial 100 copies are being printed, but it is expected that, with the help of parents and friends, the final sales figure could significantly surpass that figure.
