Tayside flu vaccine
Flu vaccine supplies in Tayside have risen to their required level following shortages last month, according to health officials, writes Grant Hill.
NHS Tayside said problems with the supply of vaccination services throughout the UK have now been resolved and that people who have not been immunised yet should contact their doctor’s surgery to arrange to get the jab.

At one stage supplies were said to be some 150,000 doses short to cope with demand in Scotland.

One Dundee pensioner was told he would have to wait a month for the first available appointment at Maryfield Medical Clinic whilst another complained of a 19-day wait for an appointment at Coldside Medical Practice.

Fears were expressed that the flu coming early would have grave consequences if immunisation was delayed, particularly for frail elderly people.

However, a spokesman for NHS Tayside said, “The brief interruption to supplies of flu vaccine which affected Tayside, along with all other regions of the UK, in November has now passed and reports from our community pharmacies show there are presently sufficient supplies to meet demand.

“Vaccine manufacturers have also indicated they now have sufficient stocks to meet any unexpected local shortages.

“It’s inevitable that the earlier interruption to supplies will have slowed down our flu immunisation programme a little, but like most other areas of Scotland we expect to return to normal very shortly.

“People who were due to receive a flu jab and have not yet been immunised should contact their surgery to arrange a suitable time.

“The latest reports from flu spotter practices in Tayside show normal seasonal activity and at present do not give cause for concern.”
