| Carers pay the price |
| I AM glad the SNP is attempting to raise the plight of carers and the people for whom they care, through MSPs Shona Robison and John Swinney. |
| I hope they are proud of their flagship council in Angus, which has apparently managed to hold out for extra money from the Scottish Executive.
It is just a pity that carers and the people they look after have had to pay the price for this.
It’s easy to make a stand when it is not you who has to pay the price.
The council is delaying, and refusing to carry out assessments of needs, thus avoiding having to provide services.
I do hope this time they spend any money on providing support and respite to the elderly, instead of using it to produce another set of plans, brochures and conferences.
There is little point in consulting with people, when there appears to be no intention of doing anything.
There are an estimated 660,000 carers in Scotland and only 912 have been able to access direct payments. — Douglas Thain, Pitairlie Road, Dundee.

| Shopping’s a pleasure |

Staff at Bayne’s (from left) Lynne, Karen and Susan with the display that has won then an award with the bakery chain for the Tayside and Fife area.
| I THANK Lynne and staff at Bayne’s the bakers in Fintry, Dundee, for the beautiful Christmas fairylight window display.
It is a pleasure to go into the shop.
The girls are so kind and welcoming. — OAP, Fintry.

| Move funfair ride from square |

The City Square and most of the tree hidden behind the fairground ride.
| DUNDEE CITY Council should not allow a funfair ride to be located in front of the lovely-decorated City Square, blocking the view of the Christmas tree.
I have no objections to the ride but it should be situated in a more suitable location.
If anything is needed, I say bring back the ice rink. — Big Kid at Christmas.

| Few male cleaners |
| HAS ANYONE else noticed the failure of industry to employ more male cleaners to sweep office blocks and scrub toilets?
Despite over 30 years of equal rights legislation, cleaning is still a female-dominated industry. Whether this situation favours men or women is a question I do not wish to pursue here. The fact is that, either way, equality of numbers would be preferable.
Given many idle young men seem to loiter round the job centres, I propose half of the female cleaners in Dundee be sacked immediately (in the name of progress) to be replaced by males. — Equality Seeker.

| Old buses were better |
| I REPLY to the letter about the new Gemini buses that Travel Dundee is running on various services.
I agree they are smart, but they struggle going up a slope. The reason is they have only a seven-litre engine.
The old buses, numbered from 91 to 105, were the best the company had. — Bus Enthusiast.

| Try the 3js |
| JINGS THERE’S a big difference between an orra man and an orry person. The former is a farm labourer, the latter an uncouth person.
For the mither tongue try the 3Js chatroom at www.dcthomson.co.uk. — Ex-Dundonian.

| Nursery play area is mud field |
| I HAVE two grand- children who attend Law and Bellfield nurseries in Dundee.
Both receive excellent care from the dedicated staffs.
Law has a large, safe area where the facilities can be enjoyed by the children, playing on their bikes and so on.
Bellfield, on the other hand, also has a safe enclosed area, but it is a mud field.
The staff and some parents have tried in vain to turn this area into a garden.
It is about time Dundee City Council took some responsibility and set about upgrading the area.
There doesn’t appear to be a shortage of money as many open areas all over Dundee are equipped with such facilities and are never used by children. — Concerned Gran.
