| Fed up with whining smokers |
| I AM sick fed up with smokers whining on about how unfair the proposed smoking ban is, and how it is going to affect them. |
| What about the effect their smoke has had on the non-smoker in public places?
For far too long smokers have dominated the pubs/clubs.
I have nothing against the people who smoke (I stopped smoking 17 years ago to show a bit of support to my dad, who eventually died a slow and very painful death due to smoking), but why can’t I, as a non-smoker, visit a pub/club and sit in a smoke-free atmosphere?
I praise Jack McConnell for having the guts to stand up to the smokers in Scotland and say enough is enough. — Fresh Air Please. |
| New buses a touch of class |

One of the new buses in Dundee High Street.
| HAVE YOU been on a new Dundee bus?
Man, eh think they’re really plus!
Some o’ oor buses were auld an’ smelly
Now it’s like stepping into an ad on the telly!
When eh get on eh’m filled wi’ glee
Cos eh’m an OAP an’ get this luxury for free!
It feels like stepping intae a Rolls
As it swiftly goes from pole tae pole.
The powers wha’ bocht them deserves a mention
God bless them for their good intention. — M. Dudgeon, Alpin Terrace, Dundee. |
| Musical ambassadors heading to America |
| I WISH members of Dundee Schools Music Theatre’s Back to Back group the very best of luck for the continuation of their “Side by Side by Sondheim” tour.
They take the show to America next week.
I saw the show at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in August and thought it was a fantastic, first-rate performance.
I have no doubt they will be wonderful ambassadors for the city and musical theatre in Scotland. — Proud Dundonian.

| Football is spontaneous |
| FIRST MINISTER Jack McConnell’s comments on the recent Rangers v. Celtic match were perhaps true, but he should remember football is spontaneous and players don’t turn up to be red-carded nor fans to be arrested.
Football will always throw up such games every now and then.
Mr McConnell should also keep in mind that many innocent civilians have been slain due to his party’s decision to attack Iraq.
If all we had to worry about was the odd football match, the world would be a better place. — George Aimer, Kinghorne Road, Dundee. |
| Not all good in Vancouver |
| NO BAD language in Vancouver? I lived there for years.
Sure there is not the vile cursing apparently so common among many ignorant, uncouth people in Dundee.
In Vancouver they have the highest heroin abuse in North America, breaking and entering is an epidemic, and young people are begging in the streets.
The east end of Vancouver is one of the worst places on earth. Heroin is openly injected and the area is a nightmare to anyone who ventures through it.
Vehicle windows are smashed in underground parking lots, junkies looking for something to hawk in pawn shops roam the downtown areas. The laws are a joke. Criminals are slapped on the wrist and called victims.
Sure, so many of Dundee’s youth have no idea how pathetic they really sound when they curse and swear.
But to paint Vancouver as some kind of nirvana is complete fantasy. Could it be the writer from Vancouver never reads the local paper or watches local TV? — Reality Bites, Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.
