Dundee’s efforts to beat retail crime rewarded
Dundee’s “tremendous efforts” to make the city a crime-free shopping environment have been rewarded with a prestigious national award.
Today, the British Retail Consortium’s Safer Shopping Award was handed over to Dundee Lord Provost John Letford by Scottish Business Crime Centre executive director Alan Dobie.

The award recognises standards of management and operation by retail crime partnerships. After Glasgow, Dundee is the only other place in Scotland to have received this.

The British Retail Consortium represents every type of retailer in the UK, from large multiples and department stores through to independents. Its aim includes campaigns to promote and protect retailer’s interests and advice on threats to and opportunities for their business.

Places applying for the award have to meet strict criteria about safe shopping, including effective links with the police and information-sharing initiatives.

In recent years Dundee has benefited from the introduction of an extensive CCTV system and the establishment of the Dundee Co-ordinated Anticrime Network (DUNCAN). This is a partnership that includes the city council, Tayside Police, retailers, the city centre action group and the community safety partnership.

As well as the city centre, it has now been extended to take in Lochee and Kingsway West retail park.

The Dundee City Council’s economic development convener Councillor Joe Morrow said, “Tremendous efforts have been made over the last few years to make the city a thriving, dynamic shopping centre and we are all very proud of Dundee’s success.

“Both local shoppers and the many who come from outwith the area have the right to feel safe while they are enjoying the range of stores that the city has to offer.

“It is only through partnership working that results like this can be achieved.”

Scottish Retail Consortium director Fiona Moriarty said, “Winning the Safer Shopping Awards shows that DUNCAN has exceeded expectations within the formative years of this crucially important local partnership between the public and private sector.

“I am extremely pleased that Dundee is leading the way by meeting the strict standards required to gain this award.”
