Chemistry curiosity satisfied

Over 800 Primary Seven pupils from all over Tayside will be satisfying their curiosity about chemistry this week.
The ‘Curious about Chemistry — Chemistry at Work’ event has been organised by the Dundee City STEM Partnership with SETPOINT Scotland North on behalf of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The workshops allow pupils to experience some of the basic principles of chemistry as they are applied in industry, research and everyday life from people who actually practise chemistry in some form in their day-to-day jobs.

The aim is to show a positive image of the chemical sciences as exciting, interesting and wealth-creating activities, which is hoped will stimulate pupils’ interest in the subject and help them appreciate its importance in society and their everyday lives.

Pupils will see and meet industrialists and staff from a variety of organisations, as well as taking part in some interactive and hands-on demonstrations.

The organisations range from those whose main activity is chemistry or chemical science, to companies that use chemistry in less obvious ways.

The presentations vary from a look at how chemicals are used to assist police in the detection of crime (Police Forensic Science Laboratory), their influence over the flavour and fragrance of foodstuffs (Macphie of Glenbervie), to their value in the treatment of water (Scottish Water). A further benefit is that each of the participating organisations is locally based.

Events Manager Lesley Robertson said, “Chemistry is integral to all our lives, and plays an important role in society and the prosperity of the economy. Curious about Chemistry provides pupils with a valuable insight into the importance of chemistry and is an excellent way of stimulating their interest in the subject.”

Today, nine schools from Angus were taking part in the event at the Bonar Hall. Tomorrow, nine schools from Dundee will be involved and on Thursday 12 schools from Perth and Kinross.
