| Born in Cleghorn Street, Dundee, in 1904, Robert attended Mitchell Street and Rosebank Schools, and started work in the jute mills at the age of 12.
He then worked as a slater, but left Dundee for London in his late teens. He later settled in Edinburgh where he continued work as a slater.
Dundee was always close to his heart, however, and he met and married his late wife, Dundonian Lilias, on October 28, 1934.
They lived in Edinburgh where they brought up two sons, Bill and Robert, now deceased, and daughters, Audrey and Irene
Robert is celebrating his birthday in Edinburgh this evening with 60 friends and family.
Audrey said, “Dad likes a dance so we have got a band especially for him.
“Dundee has always remained close to his heart. We took him back there last week and photographed him sitting on the windowsill of the house he was born in in Cleghorn Street.” |
