Arbroath drivers’ detour difficulties

The traffic lights still in operation at the top of Lordburn.

Getting to parts of Arbroath by car at the moment, especially the Fit o’ the Toon area, is becoming something of a magical mystery tour.
Road closures to key routes to allow for carriageway reconstruction and pipe-laying mean lengthy diversions are required.

Ladybridge Street is closed from the East Grimsby junction, which requires motorists to take a marathon Burnside Drive/A92/Grant Road/Leonard Street/Stanley Street/Barbers Croft/Ponderlaw/Hill Place/Hill Street and High Street alternative route.

Work is expected to disrupt traffic movement in this area for at least another five weeks.

Another key route, Lordburn, has also been closed to traffic as Transco carries out main-laying work.

Abbey Path has also been closed and vehicles can no longer enter the upper High Street from this juntion.

The one-way traffic order affecting the High Street has been rescinded temporarily to allow access and unloading via a diversion along Burnside Drive and Guthrie Port. This closure is also expected to last into November.

Curiously, the traffic lights serving this busy junction are still working despite the area being free from vehicular traffic.

“Is this an oversight, or have they been left on to assist pedestrians to know when its is safe to proceed on to the High Street in case they bump into anybody?” remarked one local.

“When the red light shows, does this mean all pedestrians must stand around and wait?”
