Students to torch flat
A flat in Dundee will be set on fire next week in the hope of saving the lives of students throughout Britain.
The University of Dundee is making a DVD that will ultimately be sent to 120 higher education centres around the country in a bid to promote fire safety for students living in residence.

The project follows research over the past five years, which suggests students are at increased risk living away from home.

Former and current students of the school of television and imaging are involved in the project, which will produce a film lasting between five and seven minutes.

Larry Fortune, the university’s fire safety advisor, said, “Dundee City Council has provided us with a flat at Kilwinning Place to light live fires for the film, which we will be doing next Tuesday. The fire brigade and ambulance services are also taking part, along with rector, Lorraine Kelly, who has recorded some footage for the film.

“The most common type of fire in students’ residences are probably cooking fires, which we will be filming a demonstration of for the short film.

“Other types of fire we will be tackling are those caused by cigarettes and candles or tealights.”

The project has the backing ofthe fire brigade and the local authority.

Earlier this year, 16 students at an English university escaped from their accommodation in the early hours of the morning after lit candles set fire to a television.

Fire crews said candles had been left burning unattended all night and the students were lucky to get out of the building.

A brigade spokesman said at the time, “I have set fire to a television deliberately to test how this might work with candles, and you get quite a fierce fire within 10 to 15 minutes.”
